Surjit is dual qualified and is a Solicitor in England and Wales and an Advocate in India. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Masters in Innovation, Technology & Law and has a further Masters in Intellectual Property law. In addition, he holds a Degree in science and a PG Diploma in Biochemical Technology.
Before starting a career in the field of Intellectual Property law, Surjit briefly practiced law in India in the area of Civil & Commercial litigation. Surjit has worked in-house for more than a decade at various levels looking after IP and legal affairs in both pharmaceutical and engineering sectors.
Surjit has significant experience in all aspects of trade mark management, protection and enforcement and has the experience in managing and policing worldwide trade mark portfolios. He has particular expertise in advising on domain name issues and IP issues relating to social media and the internet. With his excellent attention to detail and the ability to swiftly get to the bottom of complex IP issues, Surjit has been well known among his clients and is sought after.
Surjit’s area of interest and expertise covers both contentious and non-contentious matters in relation to both registered and unregistered trademarks. In his career of more 10 years in the field of IP, he has registered numerous trade marks in the UKIPO (UK Intellectual Property Office), EUIPO (EU Intellectual Property Office), and India. He has successfully opposed and defended trademark applications. He also has extensive experience in dealing with trademark infringement on various ecommerce platforms such as ebay, amazon, alibaba, dhgate. His approach to trademark disputes is extremely business oriented.
Surjit has a passion for IP protection and enforcement of industrial designs and has successfully registered many industrial designs in the UKIPO (UK Intellectual Property Office) and EUIPO (EU Intellectual Property Office). He has also been involved in filing and prosecution of many design patent applications in the USA and China and is familiar with the relevant laws in those jurisdictions. His works in this area also includes prior art search and analysis for establishing novelty as well as freedom to operate. Surjit is also passionate about sketching product designs. He believes that visual aesthetics of a product can create significant commercial value to a product.
Surjit has gained over 10 years’ experience in the area of patent law. He has mainly dealt with subject matters in the field of mechanical engineering. He has extensive experience of advising on patent filing strategies and portfolio management. Surjit has advised many start-ups and inventors on protection and exploitation of IP. He has also advised them on safeguarding critical or confidential information during the product development process.
Surjit loves cooking traditional Manipuri dishes and spicy Indian curries (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian). He does not cook for himself only; he enjoys sharing his home-made foods with friends and colleagues as well. He is an avid Arsenal supporter and a Delhi Daredevils (Delhi Capitals) IPL cricket fan. In his spare time, he likes watching documentaries on wildlife protection and conservation. Of late, he has started practicing yoga.
